Publishing Community Group - Past Calendar

Digital Comics Task Force aims to address specific non-normative work and challenges within the digital comics ecosystem. This plenary will present the challenges and process for this work, which, given the significant time zone differences, will prioritise writing-based collaboration via GitHub Issues labelled with TF: Comics and reach out to publishers and reading system creators to collect feedback and encourage participation.

As our group continues to facilitate incubation and support the advancement of digital publishing standards, this session is an opportunity to reflect on our workflows and our toolset. We aim to discuss how we can refine our processes to better support our collaborative goals and clarify how our group's work aligns with the broader W3C ecosystem.
We look forward to your feedback and active participation in shaping the PCG's future direction.

We will review concrete examples (e.g. TTS mispronunciations, frequent language shifts, “dead” languages, and typographic side effects) and clarify what can be solved by better markup versus what requires changes in reading systems or assistive technologies.

Please review and, if you can, comment on: https://github.com/daisy/transitiontoepub/issues/92, and bring one or two brief examples from your own workflow where language changes caused problems. Meeting details (date, time, connection info) will be shared on the usual list; feel free to forward this invitation to interested colleagues.

2026, June 25th, AI Preference Signals

This session will examine the fine-grained acceptance of content usage through IETF signals once a content provider has reserved their Text and Data Mining (TDM) rights via TDMRep.
Our discussion will focus on the proposed vocabulary:

• The current IETF draft defines the terms AI Model Training and Search.
• Other proposed terms related to AI inference: AI Grounding, AI Input, and AI Remix.
The goal of the plenary is to collect feedback on the central question: is this the specific vocabulary that publishers really need?

Discuss and document uncommon and experimental digital publishing.

Following recurrent discussions going back and forth between Community and Maintenance WG, challenging how topics are incubated before becoming part of the EPUB specification, we will hold a plenary discussion on this workflow.
This discussion will build on the GitHub thread “Incubation of features and Ideas vs. adding them to the Spec” to clarify when issues are better handled by the CG and when they should move to the WG.
During the plenary, we will collect concrete ideas, expectations, and next steps from both implementers and content creators, with the goal of establishing a clearer and more predictable path from incubation to specification changes.

Dear colleagues,

You are cordially invited to our Community Group plenary on 23 April at 16:00 UTC (18:00 CEST) to discuss anti-counterfeit options for publishers.

We will host presentations of available services by

• Anna Berthod (1D345 Compilatio - https://www.compilatio.net/),

• Giacomo D’Angelo/Titusz Pan (Amlet - https://amlet.ai/) and

• Sebastian Posth (Liccium - https://liccium.com)

and explore practical approaches to detection, response, and prevention.

We look forward to your participation!

Best regards,
Gautier and Wolfgang

We will hold a plenary discussion on parallel content in EPUB, building on the explainer "Parallel Content" and the GitHub discussion "Ways to publish and consume parallel content”.
The goal is to collect concrete use cases and requirements from content creators and implementers, and to discuss whether and how this work should evolve into a dedicated EPUB WG task force.

Discuss and document uncommon and experimental digital publishing.

We will discuss what the W3C Web Publications format is suitable for and explore its distinction from EPUB and other formats — in other words, under what conditions it is the best option. We would love to hear testimonies from professionals who are using or considering the use of the Web Publications format. Please come and join us!

Breno Duarte, from the NEES/UFAL group, will present challenges and foreseen solutions in supporting interactive and accessible publications in the context of Brazil's National Textbook Program, both in terms of production and distribution.

This presentation will explore VitalSource's journey implementing AI in their eTextbook reading system, with a focus on how thoughtful, principled use of AI can enhance student engagement with higher ed course materials. Nick Brown, VP Product, will share insights from VitalSource's experience building Bookshelf CoachMe, an award-winning AI-powered feature that has been shown to triple student engagement with their textbooks and improve learning outcomes.

Nick will outline the learning science foundations that guide their AI development, their approach to balancing publisher rights and concerns with innovation, and lessons learned from years of research and implementation. Nick will also discuss their AI principles framework, which ensures their technology remains ethical, transparent, and centered on improving educational outcomes rather than simply deploying AI for its own sake. The session will conclude with open Q&A regarding the future landscape of AI in educational content and reading systems.
